How will you use your talents and education to make the world a better place for future generations? What are your career and personal goals and why?
The career I am researching is Neonatal Nurse. Neonatal nurses are nurses who care for newborns in the first 28 days of their life. They mainly focus on infants who have birth defects, are ill, are premature, or they are entirely healthy. I am interested in this career because of the love and care I have towards newborns. My younger cousin inspired me to pursue this career. When he was born, he had many birth defects. After he was discharged home, I took care of him before he was admitted back to the hospital due to more extreme health problems. When he is much older to understand what a career is, I will explain to him that he is the reason why I am following up the path in becoming a neonatal nurse.
The fact that I will be taking care of infants interests me the most. Even though I would be providing special care and health conditions towards the newborns; I also would be giving assistance to the patients’ parents and their families. A neonatal nurse is mostly likely to be found in a Neonatal Intensive Care Unit or NICU. Other times they are in a hospital, and the patients they work with are newborns.
However, two things that I believe will help me with my career are communication skills and being able to grow personally and professionally. Communication skill will help me to communicate with the parents of the patient and even close relatives. It will also help me to understand the background of the child and know what to study before performing a task. Being able to grow personally and professionally in my career will help me to not be emotionally attached to my work and to separate my personal life from my professional life.
In conclusion, after researching this career I am still interested because I learned more interesting facts about my career that I was not aware of. One step I can take towards my career this year is to continue my anatomy and physiology and psychology courses. When I pass these courses with an A’s I will be ready to start the nursing program my sophomore year. My long term goal to help me with my career is to graduate college with my BSN. After this is complete, I will be ready to start my career.
