I think regular training is crucial in preparing healthcare students to perform life-saving techniques on patients. As a licensed practical nurse, I have participated in performing CPR on three occasions and successfully performed the Heimlich maneuver on one occasion. The skills I learned in CPR class and school came back to me in the moment because we are required to retake CPR classes every two years. The repetition helps. I think that it is also important to have a plan for decompression after the event. In each case, my adrenaline was pumping afterwards, and I found it helpful to discuss what happened with a supervisor. We went over what went right, and how we could do better in the future.
