Phuong Phan - Empowering Med Scholarship

I was born and raised in Vietnam. I can do well in the sciences because my parents are both teachers. My dream has been to become a pharmacist since I was a kid, and I find it fascinating in science because it challenges me. However, the way I see it, working in the healthcare field is exciting.

I studied to be a pharmacist in Vietnam, so I enjoy working in a lab setting. There was a significant turning point in my life when I came to the U.S. Because I was not native to speaking English, I felt I needed to start at the beginning of my college. English for the pharmacist-specific major is a heavy workload. I was shocked, startled, and felt unsettled adapting to American life, such as: finding a house to live in, applying for jobs, opening bank accounts for my parents and me, learning how to drive a car, and feeling homesick. I could not speak English well; therefore, I faced discrimination at my first job here, which resulted in me needing mental health support. If a patient can’t speak English, it’s difficult to consult. This encourages me to become a pharmacist who can help people like mine. To be more specific, lacking knowledge plays a significant role in failing to take a drug properly. Some medications taken simultaneously can be inactive or produce harmful effects and interactions. Pharmacists are the last defense for patients when filling prescriptions because of the interaction of different drugs that can have adverse effects from medications. Pharmacists demand a specific set of skills. I need to be diligent and study hard in school and connect to both patients and other health professionals.

Pharmacists must be patient and have communication skills to cope with patients under challenging circumstances. This is one of the main parts of a pharmacist’s job. A good example is that pharmacists have played an essential role in combating health problems, and there’s no room for error. Pharmacists have to resolve any situation in performing complex tasks, but they need to carefully break down how and when they should take the medications. I am expected to know the fundamentals of chemistry, pharmacology, mathematics, and medical terminology. This is scientific evidence to support this notation, as a doctor have found that using Allegra and any antacids together will increase your risk of side effects. The pharmacist is like the teacher at school. The patients are like the students; like doctors, the pharmacists must be patient and have communication skills to cope with patients under challenging circumstances. A good example is that pharmacists have played an essential role in combating health problems, and there’s no room for error. Above all else, I need to be diligent and study hard in school and connect to both patients and other health professionals. It is essential to explain the different and complex information clearly, simply when it becomes available.

My parents were teachers who received fewer salaries than other occupations because we lived in Vietnam. These days, people are most concerned about money. They also wonder how the money be made be quickly and effortlessly. Some people decide to improve their quality of life and everyday living by tricking others into obedience. On the contrary, others volunteer to help the unlucky ones. I learned to be kind, helpful, and treat people well from my parents and the Bible. Kindness is the value that I appreciate the most and want to share with others. According to Oxford Dictionary, “Kindness means the quality of being friendly, generous, and considerate.” My mom advises me “giving less, and receiving more because one good turn deserves another.” Being a caregiver is an initial step on the long road to working with the patient, and I currently have obtained work as a caregiver. I want to help other people and contribute my efforts toward society. I also volunteered my time to assist the Vietnamese and American elderly. I volunteered to bring them groceries. They had limited access to outside help; some can’t use the Internet or their phones. I volunteered to help as a medical translator. I volunteered to bring them groceries. The problem is at our doorstep; I chose to volunteer and support my community. I volunteered and worked with an individual who need a rebreather and oxygen mask. A little kindness each day might seem an insignificant act for you; however, it might mean the world to another person in need; it also can be contagious and contribute to boosting the performance of our organization. Studies state, “Perpetually kind people have 23% less cortisol (the stress hormone) and age slower than the average population.” Kindness can lead to overall improvements in mental health and the immune system. Helping your peers out may not be a sense of duty, but it helps get our projects done faster. Our fatigue isn’t caused by long workdays but by frustration and resentment. Even if we are struggling, we should always remain kind and cheerful. Love never hurts, but love heals. We can all make life easier for ourselves, societies, and even our world by doing a small act of kindness each day.

In conclusion, I chose this career because I want to help people obtain good healthcare and contribute something positive to society. I will need extensive knowledge, so I have prepared myself by studying diligently. I have to believe in myself and that you deserve to be treated with respect and integrity. Considering this, our fatigue isn’t caused by a long day working, but frustration and resentment are. No matter how badly people treat us, never drop drown to their level because we are beautiful inside and out. Maybe not today, perhaps not tomorrow, but someday we can see that people repay their kindness with our kindness. Doing new things that I am passionate about will motivate me to do more new things. Risks, obstacles, mistakes, and experiences will build a good pharmacist as I want to become.
