What phlebotomy training costs
We deliberately do not publish prices here, because tuition changes often and a stale number would cost you money. Ask each program for a written total before you enroll. These are the items that change that total:
- Tuition, which is usually lowest at a public community or technical college.
- Residency, since public colleges charge in-district students less than everyone else.
- Supplies, such as scrubs, gloves, a tourniquet and a textbook.
- Health requirements, such as immunizations, a tuberculosis test and a background check.
- The certification exam, which is billed by the certifying body, not by the school.
Many of the colleges listed above accept financial aid, workforce grants or employer sponsorship for these programs. That is worth asking on your first call.
Questions to ask when you call
- What is the total cost, including supplies, immunizations and the certification exam?
- How many hours long is the program, and how many weeks does that take?
- How many successful venipunctures will I perform on real people before I finish?
- Do you arrange the clinical placement, or do I have to find one myself?
- Which certification exam does this prepare me for, and what is your pass rate?
- Does my state require a license or a state-approved program, and does this program satisfy that?
- What are the entry requirements, such as a diploma, immunizations or a background check?
- When does the next cohort start, and is there a waiting list?
Requirements vary by state. California, Louisiana, Nevada and Washington regulate who may draw blood, so in those states the answer to question six decides whether a program is useful to you at all.
